Biography

During his 50 year career as a photographer and photojournalist, Leigh Wiener (1929-1993) photographed every American president from Truman to Reagan, Hollywood legends from Marilyn to Marlon, musicians from Miles to Sinatra, poets, scientists, writers and captains of industry. By the age of 15 in 1944 he had sold his first photograph. He moved to Los Angeles in 1946 and worked in the photography section of the Los Angeles Times. As a photographer in 1949, he covered the death of the little girl Fiscus who touched the whole of America. His photographs made the cover of several hundred newspapers and launched his career. Wiener became a staff photographer at the LA Times and shot freelance for Life, Time, Fortune…. In 1975, he created and co-hosted the hit television programme ‘Talk about Pictures’ where professional photographers, amateurs, as well as collectors came to talk about photographs. He was also awarded for his documentary ‘A Slice of Sunday.’ Leigh Wiener’s photographs are in the permanent collections of the National Portrait Gallery and many national museums. He has also published numerous books that include his photos.
