Biography
In Paris and Cabourg from the 1880’s, Léopold Mercier practised a lucrative business as photographer and editor, producing photographic reproductions of works of art and publishing books like ‘"he History of Art in Pictures" by Emile Bayard. Based in Paris at 27 rue de Ponthieu, he introduced his business on small, sky-blue visiting cards which flatteringly quoted "Gold and silver medals – Paris 1889 Photography of the Champs-Elysées"; he regularly edited small advertising leaflets which presented the long list of works of art by painters and sculptors in alphabetic order featuring in the studio catalogue. Léopold Mercier also produced photographic reports in artists’ studios, during artistic exhibitions or big Parisian events, like the Buffalo Bill Circus visit to Paris in 1905 with a magnificent series of Sioux portraits. His business came to an end in 1913, enabling retirement to his villa in Cabourg.
