About this photograph :
Archange Saint Michel
Archangel Saint Michel, arrow of the abbey dominating the bay of the Mont Saint Michel, Normandy, France (48°37 ' - 1°30 ' 0). Perched to 170 m, on the arrow of the "Wonder", the statue of the archangel Saint Michel, conqueror of the dragon, overhangs the eponymous abbey and bay. In the Middle Age, this high place of Christendom, founded in the 8th century, attracted numbers of pilgrims who challenged moving sands and tides as fast "as a galloping horse" (the strongest of Europe). Many lost their life thus. Today the tourist appeal of the site, attended each year by 3.5 million visitors, overrides its religious vocation. An unsinkable dike, built in 1880, facilitated this development by binding the rock to the continent, but it disturbs the ecological operation and causes the silting-up of the bay. Its replacement by a new boom and a bridge deck should allow the tides and the Couesnon River to brew the sediments to return to the landscape its maritime and insular dimension. About the artist :
Yann
Arthus-Bertrand
Movie actor, then responsible for an animal sanctuary in the sixties. Air balloon pilot in Kenya in the seventies. He began the photography to illustrate his thesis on the lions. He struggled to carry out his exhibit The Earth from Above, which attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors. His book of the same title became a true best seller. Eternal lover of Earth and man, he devotes his work to the defense of populations and places in precarious situation. His book 365 days: Earth from Above dedicates each day of the year to an endangered site. The passion of the public allows hoping that the call of this photographer has been heard. Humbly, Yann Arthus Bertrand assures that his photographs, of striking beauty, do nothing but to reproduce the world. Still it is necessary to know how to look at it. The colorful, resplendent, singularly geometrical images that he brings back from here and elsewhere form one of the most beautiful anthems to the earth.
