All show the nocturnal hustle and bustle of the metropolises of Dubai, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tokyo and New York. The lighting on the streets and in buildings symbolizes all this activity. And yet the same lighting that creates the abstract and surreal image of a city that never sleeps also epitomizes in its artificiality an unmistakable loneliness.

Marcus Koppen was born in Minden, Germany, 1973. His settled in 2003 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and began working as a freelance photographer for a variety of national and international magazines and agencies. Travelling around the world on various assignments, he has become particularly interested in megacities. Koppen is fascinated by how rapidly the cityscapes of these modern urban giants are changing, as well as their growing importance. What he finds most inspiring is the surreal, artificial atmosphere that takes hold of these cities at night.
