At the age of 44, Jukka-Pekka Metsävainio is an astro-photographer. He lives in Oulu, a Finland town 170 km south of the Arctic. At this latitude the night, try as it might to be long, only falls for part of the year, from September to March, and he has to brave icy temperatures to set up his telescope and photographic equipment. “When the sky is photographed from the centre of an industrial town, and the sky is sometimes covered for five weeks in a row, both pragmatism and creativity is required.” JPMBesides an original palette, Jukka-Pekka has put together an amazing technique for looking at stars in three dimensions. He spends a lot of time in front of his computer. Since 2004, he has developed several original methods for processing his celestial photos, inspired by techniques used in his job as an industrial designer. The most spectacular is stereoscopy, which gives great volume to the diaphanous spirals of the nebula.
