About this photograph :
Procession d'icebergs
"Meandering around icebergs is like walking through an Impressionist painter’s retrospective. The fleeting impression of light is created by the subtle changes in the atmosphere. Infinite variations of form, one more gracious than the next. The colors blend and evolve in perfect harmony as the crystals reflect the sun. Unlike sea ice, which is frozen water, icebergs are composed of compressed snow; snowfall that has piled up over thousands of years, eventually compacting under its own weight into a pure, white, freshwater ice. The crystalline structure contains billions of trapped compressed-air bubbles – residues of ancient atmospheres. In the spring, icebergs are released from surrounding frozen sea and start moving on their own – extraordinarily unique shapes create a floating sculptural exhibition. The transformation continues as they melt and fracture into flocks of smaller iceberg in the heat of the summer sun." Luc Hardy, July 2008.
