About this photograph :
8Th Avenue, West Village
The West Village is the area of Greenwich Village west of 7th Avenue in Lower Manhattan in New York City. Greenwich Village was known in the late 19th to mid 20th centuries as the bohemian capital and the East Coast birthplace of the Beat movement. In recent days, the Village has maintained its role in New York as a centre for movements that have challenged the wider American culture, for example, its role in the gay liberation movement. As Greenwich Village was once a rural hamlet, to the north of the earliest European settlement on Manhattan Island, its street layout is more haphazard than the 19th-century grid plan. Greenwich Village was allowed to keep its street pattern resulting in a neighbourhood whose streets are dramatically different, in layout, from the ordered structure of newer parts of town. Many of the neighbourhood's streets are narrow and some curve at odd angles. Redevelopment in this area is severely regulated, and developers must preserve the main facade and aesthetics of the buildings even during renovation.
About the artist :
Cédric
Mainguy
Cédric Mainguy was born in Aix en Provence on June 2nd, 1975. Cédric was introduced to travelling around the world at a very young age. He returned to France to go to university and completed his studies at Reims Management School in 1999. Cedric then continued travelling around the world for several years, experiencing other cultures, meeting people from other communities, seeing the beauty and sometimes ugliness of the world. His journey finally brought him to New York where he lived for 7 years. Whilst working as an investment banker, Cedric continued working on his true passion, photography. He soon specialized in creating large panoramic pictures of Manhattan street blocks. Exploring new techniques, Cedric developed a unique way of capturing the spirit of New York. Thanks to his original perspective, the streets of New York reveal their true nature and seem to have a mood of their own.
