About this photograph :
8Th Street, Greenwich Village
Greenwich Village in New York, often simply called "the Village”, is a largely residential neighbourhood on the west side of Lower Manhattan in New York City. A large majority of the district is home to upper middle class families. Greenwich Village, however, was known in the late 19th to mid 20th centuries as the bohemian capital and the East Coast birthplace of the Beat movement. Most parts of Greenwich Village comprise mid-rise apartments, 19th-century terraced houses and the occasional detached house, a sharp contrast to the surrounding skyscrapers. At the current time, artists and local historians mourn the fact that the bohemian days of Greenwich Village are long gone, because of the extraordinarily high housing costs in the neighbourhood. The artists have fled to first to SoHo then to TriBeCa and finally Williamsburg and Bushwick in Brooklyn, Long Island City, and DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass). Nevertheless, residents of Greenwich Village still possess a strong community identity and are proud of their neighbourhood's unique history and fame, and its well-known liberal live-and-let-live attitudes.
About the artist :
Cédric
Mainguy
Cédric Mainguy was born in Aix en Provence on June 2nd, 1975. Cédric was introduced to travelling around the world at a very young age. He returned to France to go to university and completed his studies at Reims Management School in 1999. Cedric then continued travelling around the world for several years, experiencing other cultures, meeting people from other communities, seeing the beauty and sometimes ugliness of the world. His journey finally brought him to New York where he lived for 7 years. Whilst working as an investment banker, Cedric continued working on his true passion, photography. He soon specialized in creating large panoramic pictures of Manhattan street blocks. Exploring new techniques, Cedric developed a unique way of capturing the spirit of New York. Thanks to his original perspective, the streets of New York reveal their true nature and seem to have a mood of their own.
