About this photograph :
Chinatown, South Of East Broadway
Manhattan's Chinatown is an ethnic Chinese enclave located on Manhattan Island in New York City. Manhattan's Chinatown is one of the largest and oldest ethnic Chinese communities outside of Asia. Chinese greengrocers and fishmongers are clustered all along East Broadway (especially by Catherine Street). Due to the high savings rate among the Chinese, there are many Asian and American banks in the neighbourhood. There are almost 200 Chinese restaurants in this area as well as some factories. Although the vast majority of this industry is based in China, the clothing industry remains, in Chinatown, an important line of business. Much of the resident population growth is due to immigration. As previous generations of immigrants gain language and education skills, they tend to move to better housing and job prospects that are available in the suburbs and outer boroughs of New York.
About the artist :
Cédric
Mainguy
Cédric Mainguy was born in Aix en Provence on June 2nd, 1975. Cédric was introduced to travelling around the world at a very young age. He returned to France to go to university and completed his studies at Reims Management School in 1999. Cedric then continued travelling around the world for several years, experiencing other cultures, meeting people from other communities, seeing the beauty and sometimes ugliness of the world. His journey finally brought him to New York where he lived for 7 years. Whilst working as an investment banker, Cedric continued working on his true passion, photography. He soon specialized in creating large panoramic pictures of Manhattan street blocks. Exploring new techniques, Cedric developed a unique way of capturing the spirit of New York. Thanks to his original perspective, the streets of New York reveal their true nature and seem to have a mood of their own.
